French Consumer Morale at Near 2-1/2-Year High
The French consumer confidence indicator increased to 106 in November 2019 from 104 in the previous month and above market expectations of 103. It was the highest reading since June 2017, amid improvements in household’s future financial situation (-1 from -3 in October) and major purchases intentions (-4 from -5). Additionally, concerns about unemployment dropped (0 from 2) and the share of households considering that the future standard of living in France will improve in the next twelve months increased (-20 from -21). Meantime, expected saving capacity was unchanged (0, the same as in October) while the share of households considering that prices will be on the rise during the next twelve months decreased (-24 from -23).

The French consumer confidence indicator stood at 104 in October of 2019, unchanged from the previous month’s 21-month high and in line with market expectations. Households´ opinion regarding their saving intentions (11 from 10 in September) and major purchases (-6 from -7) improved. Meanwhile, concerns about unemployment increased (3 from 2) while the share of households considering that the future standard of living in France will improve in the next twelve months fell (-21 from -22). Meantime, the share of households considering that prices will be on the rise during the next twelve months increased (-23 from -25).

The French consumer confidence indicator increased to 104 in September of 2019 from an upwardly revised 103 in the previous month and above market expectations of 102. It was the highest reading since January of 2018, amid improvements in household’s future financial situation (-2 from -4 in August); major purchases intentions (-7 from -8) and expected saving capacity (4 from 1). Additionally, concerns about unemployment dropped (1 from 6) while the share of households considering that the future standard of living in France will improve in the next twelve months was unchanged (-22, the same as in August) and the share of households considering that prices will be on the rise during the next twelve months decreased (-26 from -22).

The French consumer confidence indicator was at 102 in August 2019, unchanged from the previous month and matching market expectations. It remained the highest reading since January last year, as household’s opinion regarding their future financial situation was steady (at -5) and major purchases intentions was unchanged (at -8). Also, expected saving capacity was virtually stable (0 from -1). Additionally, concerns about unemployment declined (9 from 13) and the share of households considering that the future standard of living in France will improve in the next twelve months rose (-22 from -23). Meantime, the share of households considering that prices will be on the rise during the next twelve months increased (-21 from -23).

The French consumer confidence indicator increased to 102 in July 2019 from 101 in the previous month and beating market expectations of 101. It was the highest reading since January last year, amid improvements in household’s future financial situation (-5 from -6 in June); major purchases intentions (-8 from -11) and expected saving capacity (-1 from -2). Additionally, concerns about unemployment dropped (14 from 16) while the share of households considering that the future standard of living in France will improve in the next twelve months was unchanged (-23, the same as in June). Meantime, the share of households considering that prices will be on the rise during the next twelve months was virtually stable (-23 from -22).

French Consumer Confidence Highest in Over a Year
The French consumer confidence indicator rose to 101 in June 2019 from 99 in the prior month and above market expectations of 100. It was the highest reading since April 2018, as households were more optimistic about the future standard of living in France (-23 from -25 in May) and their saving capacity (-3 from -6). Also, the proportion of households considering it is a suitable time to make major purchases increased again, for the sixth straight month (-12 from -13). Meantime, consumers' fears about their personal finances went up slightly (-6 from -5), while concerns over unemployment (at 16) and inflation (at -22) did not change.
